Dear MCCAB Boardmembers:
Kensington Heights Citizens Association (KHCA) has participated actively in the
planning for Wheaton redevelopment and its day-to-day needs. Our
anticipation of a better future for Wheaton has made us more aware and
appreciative of our past. Last year, KHCA formed a History Committee to
interview those Kensington Heights residents who have lived here for decades
and who can tell us what our community was once like and how it has changed
through the years. As we learn the forgotten stories of our oldest
residents, we recognize that there is a different kind of "resident"
with an important story to tell – the commercial buildings of Wheaton.
As the Wheaton Central Business District begins to change dramatically, we want
to know if there are any buildings in Wheaton that have historic value, based
on which architect designed them, who owned them, the quality of the
architecture, or how the buildings were used. The Silver Spring CBD conducted a
survey to begin to identify important buildings there, and we believe it is
time for the Wheaton CBD to receive the benefit of such a survey as well.
We respectfully request that the Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board recommend
to the County Executive that such a survey be undertaken.
Sincerely,
Donna R. Savage
